Summary: The Streets for People Challenge is an initiative of the Smart Cities Mission of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and ITDP India Programme. The Challenge inspires cities to reimagine their streets as public spaces through the lens of economic regeneration, safety, and child-friendly interventions, in order to ensure a green recovery from COVID-19. So far, 113 Indian cities have registered for the Challenge.
Description: As part of Stage 1 of the Challenge, registered cities will launch a CITY-LED DESIGN COMPETITION. The competition aims to crowdsource innovative ideas for designing and testing pilot interventions through quick, low-cost, and innovative solutions.
The competition briefs from the cities will include site details, design proposal requirements, competition timeline, submission guidelines and awards. The participants can view the briefs of the cities and register separately for the city they wish to submit a proposal for. In case the participant wishes to register for more than one city, they need to register for each city through the city-specific forms. The winning entries for each city will be implemented on-ground.
Under the Streets for People Challenge, the cities will test at least one pilot; comprising a flagship public space and a liveable neighbourhood. This ‘call for ideas’ includes sites for both for both flagship and neighbourhood. Participants can select one or both the sites to provide design proposals for.
The sites fall under the following typologies: Flagship public space: Market / Retail areas, Transit hubs, Liveable neighbourhood, Mixed-income neighbourhoods, Resettlement colonies, Unplanned low-income neighbourhoods.
As the competitions are rolled out by each city, the competition timeline varies for each city-led design competition. Any changes to the timeline will be notified to the participants in advance.
All winning teams are expected to assist the city with: Refining the design based on the inputs from community, city officials, and other stakeholders; Testing the design on the ground; Monitoring and Evaluation of implemented design.
Professionals and students in the fields of architecture, urban design, planning & other relevant fields are eligible. At least 1 team member should be a local resident of the city, who will serve as the representative. Multi-disciplinary collaboration is highly encouraged. There is no restriction on the number of members per team.
